Media Release: Statement on Resignation of Chris Nikou from Football Australia

Updated: Sep 20, 2023

Women Onside wish to extend our appreciation to Chris Nikou for his dedicated service on the Football Australia Board, the last five years as Chair.

Chris has played an integral role in the governance of football in Australia over this time, and we acknowledge and respect his contributions to football. We thank him for his commitment to advancing the game, both domestically and on the global stage.

Under Chris’s leadership Football Australia achieved significant milestones, the most notable being the successful bid for FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™. An event that will remain in the minds and hearts of Australia for some time and has undoubtedly elevated the stature of football in Australia.

While we bid farewell to Chris as Football Australia Chair, we look forward to a new chapter that will unfold for our sport. Such as the ambitious target of 50/50 participation gender balance by 2027 and the opportunities presented by the Federal Government’s $200m ‘Play Our Way’ funding program. We encourage the leadership of this next chapter to continue the focus on these initiatives through unified collaboration to sustain the growth and development of football in Australia.

Women Onside remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing women’s football and women in football and are optimistic about the future opportunities.

We wish Chris Nikou all the best in his future endeavours and express our gratitude for his service to football in Australia.
